On 31 January 2024, the Minister for Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Xavier Bettel, signed eight new framework agreements with nine non-governmental development organisations (NGDOs), namely Aide à l'Enfance de l'Inde et du Népal, CARE Luxembourg, Chrëschte Mam Sahel, Friendship Luxembourg, ONGD-FNEL scouts et guides pour le développement communautaire, Programmes d'Aides et de Développement destinés aux Enfants du Monde, SOS Faim, Aide internationale de la Croix-Rouge luxembourgeoise and le Soleil dans la Main.
Covering a period of three to five years, the eight framework agreements, including one in consortium between Aide internationale de la Croix-Rouge luxembourgeoise and Soleil dans la Main, will benefit from a total contribution of 56.5 million euros from the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade between 2024 and 2028. Geographically, the operations implemented under the framework agreements are located in 18 countries, namely Benin, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Kenya, Madagascar, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Laos, Myanmar, Mongolia, Peru, Bolivia and Kosovo. The interventions will be complemented by regional activities in South America, South-East Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
At the signing ceremony, Xavier Bettel reminded NGDOs of the significant responsibility they have in implementing their projects. "As development actors, you are responsible for maintaining the highest standards of ethics, transparency and accountability. You have a responsibility to ensure that every euro spent is used effectively, and that every action undertaken makes a real contribution to the well-being of the communities you serve", the Minister stressed.
Finally, Minister Bettel also took the opportunity to thank the teams and local partners of the NGDOs for their important and unrelenting work with the most vulnerable populations, whether in the Sahel region, where the security and food situation is deteriorating, or in Asia and South America, where the consequences of climate change, gender inequalities or lack of access to education are challenging local populations.
